Early painting ambition and setting realistic goals.

*Note this is an old post updated with new photos and thoughts.

It occurred to me the other day that a lot of what I see on the internet in regards to painted miniatures is often excellent and amazing. Images of hand-crafted spawning pools of chaos daemons rising from the blood pits or incredible detail on a Dwarven Lords runic hammer and armour.

Wonderful looking clash between Tzeentch and Empire forces.

Which is great, I love being inspired by such artwork. I remember when I first got into this hobby and looking at White dwarf or a codex Eavy Metal page and going 'Wow' to myself. You know this kind of thing:

Always liked that Eldar Warlock.

But despite wanting to paint something like that myself I have never been as skilled or patient enough to get anywhere near that kind of result. So this post is more a display of hope for any aspiring miniature hobby painter that no matter what you do it can only get better and we have all had to start somewhere. Indeed welcome to crudely painted Space Crusade 1991 Space Orks.

Gold skinned orks with black teeth have yet to really take off :)

These four fine chaps have now gone to the dettol dip to be cleaned up but I thought I should take a photo of what young me thought you could do with citadels paint.

Time ticks on as 2019 ends.

A final post of the year for this little blog that keeps putting out the odd nugget of oldhammer goodness.

For me it's been a good year of painting, certainly my most prolific. Not sure how I found the time to paint the following:

The Witch Lord from Heroquest
A Heresy Werewolf
Two Gretchin for a Squig Catapult
One Goff Ork
One normal Ork
A Kustom Blasta Mekanik
A looney Mad Boy
One Female Sorceress
The Keeper of Secrets that sat in my bits box for years!
An ancient Bob Olley Giant Black Orc
A converted Gyro-Stabilised Monowheel Ork Bigboss
Seven Ork Stormboyz

Now for some photos of things (2019 & older) I forgot to show or meant to include in a blog post that I never ended up creating.

Space Crusade

Somehow I ended up playing a game of Space Crusade this year and was in control of the vile alien xenos. The above photo is when the Blood Angels and Imperial Fists got a bit heretical and accused each other of joining chaos. The Genestealers jumped in for afters :)

On the Industrial world of Clarlorn, three independant kill teams investigate reports of an alien disturbance!

What is this 8th Edition 40k Kill Team doing on an oldhammer blog? Well just because the models I paint are oldhammer doesn't mean they can't be used in more modern games. As it came to be on a Bank Holiday afternoon where four squads would do battle.

Yes that is a kill team mat combined with space crusade boards!

All the models expect the Eldar guardians & the Lictor are painted by me (the nurgle space marines are very old so the painting quality isn't great but fine for the tabletop)

Original plan was a five turn game, due to time constraints, rule research and setup it instead ended on turn three.

Enough with the filler, let's introduce the teams:
