Nemesis: On the Tabletop everyone can hear you scream!

What better way to ring in 2020 than with a tabletop board game where death lurks in every room, ventilation shaft or even your own crew.

Nemesis from Awaken Realms

Welcome to the starship Nemesis. You have just woken from cryo-hibernation the ship is unknown to you, there are strange noises emanating from the corridors, an odd slime is on the floor and warning lights indicate a fire is in progress. More concerning is the dead body on the floor; she looks like she was torn apart from the inside!

After a quick debate the Captain heads to the cockpit with the soldier while the engineer (who has been oddly quiet) goes looking for tools. The Pilot heads off to check on the engines. You ease out of the hibernation pod into your motorised wheelchair, panels blink into life showing various medical charts, scientific graphs and other data. The pilot may need help as he has headed off on his own so you follow after him into the Hatch Control room... (screeesh)

It's over 10 foot tall and mucus drips from it, this alien intruder is a nightmare given life. Looking at your pistol you decide to escape rather than fight. It slashes at you but only catches the back of the wheelchair damaging various systems keeping you healthy. You race into the Comms room in panic and slam your hand on the lock door panel. The pilot doesn't believe you as he wanders off down a different corridor in search of the engine room ...

You may read all that and think this is purely imaginative story telling but this game does feel like you are part of a movie. Every step you take is laid with suspense, every action could bring about a horror from deep space and each character wants to survive but also might not want you to succeed in what you want to achieve.

The miniatures for a board game are fantastic from the alien intruders to the player character roles. The Intruder Queen as you can see is an amazing miniature with obvious homages to the Alien Queen.  I especially liked the Scientist who is in a wheelchair which reminded me of the mechanic from Alien: Resurrection.

Our game ended with no survivors, but it was close and felt very cinematic and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I shall end this post with the story from above.

... The soldier was dead, lying in a pool of blood. The captain and Pilot were struggling with the after effects of an inexpertly thrown grenade by that mechanic. There time on the ship was drawing to a horrible close as intruders surrounded them.

In another part of the ship the Scientist had found the generator and started the self-destruct countdown. He had sent out the warning signal and now he was making sure none of these things would be found. A noise from the corridor it was the mechanic (he shouted out that the self destruct must be aborted, these creatures needed to be brought back and studied.) With no hesitation the scientist locked the door and headed for the escape pods.

BOOM!

The door shattered, the mechanic walked through the dust and deactivated the self destruct. He then turned to head to the hibernation chamber. The scientist cursed at this, but anticipating such a clash of judgement pulled out the remote self destruct device. His fingers started to press the code in ... searing pain, his chest tightening .... (screiiss!!)

The scientist slumped back dying in his chair, he could only watch as the newborn intruder wiped away the blood and visceral tissue from it's maw. Screams came from the hibernation chamber, the end was nigh.
