Galvanise the memory cells with Eavy Metal!: Part 1 (White Dwarf 145)

Today we go back in time, to the early 90s. To be specific 1992 a time of mere 9 year old wonder when chocolate bars were a decent size. The Woolwich was a building society and this blog writer picked up a copy of White Dwarf for the first time in his local newsagent.

A mighty fine selection of readin'!

I do like going back and looking at old White Dwarf magazines when others post some nice painting displays or an interesting scenario. However these retrospective walks down memory lane are always within the early 100s of White Dwarf when 3rd edition Fantasy Battle was getting it's footing and Rogue Trader was but a companion and not the juggernaut 40k it is today.

My own experience of White Dwarf is much different. The first three magazines I ever got to own and read over were 145, 146 & 147. Pre 2nd Edition 40k but not quite reaching 4th Edition Warhammer Fantasy. An odd time to pick up White Dwarf except for the fact Heroquest and Space Crusade were very popular.

It was all going so well, until the Kool Aid Dreadnought blindsided them!

Yep that gateway boardgame // drug has a lot to answer for. However the Space Crusade and Heroquest articles although cool were not the only things lurking within my first white dwarf, behold!

Wassat noiz? Izzit a squig? Quicks runs away! Oooh Mushroomies!! Gigglez!

Oh these little guys were fun, not remotely useful in a battle or for Heroquest but they have charm by the bucketload. This isn't what actually grabbed my attention though.

Good luck to those Howling Banshees!

This is the first White Dwarf to truly cover Tyranids in Warhammer 40k and it went full force. We have a synopis of the race, there motives and the Hive Mind. This wonderful picture above showing them off in all there "very bright red" glory. To the top it all off we then get page after page of information about each unit. Covering Zoats, Tyranid Warriors, Genestealer Cultists, The Screamer Killer and even Mind Slaves!?
Orange Chaos Space Marines are Mind Slaves apparently?

To a young boy first looking at all this it rightly blew my mind! However for a few years this would be it until 2nd Edition finally came around.

To be continued with Issue 146 & 147.

Until Next Time.
