Movie Review - Deep Rising (1998)

Ah a movie review, these are always fun:

Deep Rising (1998) is a film that has a multitude of ideas to begin with and then turns into a standard creature feature on a ship. The basic plot is a big ferry is sabotaged by mercenaries, yet something else beats them to the money/passengers ... ominous!

Dressed in black with guns ready, the quintessential mercenary.

The film itself is surprisingly entertaining for what it is with a cast who keep you interested despite the occasional odd moment of logic. The actual effects of the creature are good and taking a leaf out of Jaws or The Thing they don’t show you it in full until very near the end. Actors you might know include Famke Janssen (X-men films), Wes Studi (Dances with Wolves, Last of the Mohicans), Jason Flemyng (various British films also Azazel in X-men: First Class) and Djimon Hounsou (GotG) in a very minor role.

Panto “It’s behind you” was never meant to be like this.

Speaking of effects the actual deaths are nice and some great work is done with the gore. However this is not a horror film and more of a monster on the loose kind of film so expect tongue in cheek dialogue and reaction to some of the things that happen.

Captain's Log: Damn it's squid surprise for dinner again.

So overall Deep Rising is an entertaining B-Movie that features guns and monsters on a ship, so think Under Siege combined with tentacles that liquidise you. If you haven’t seen it check it out. If you have and it’s been a few years then maybe give it another shot, not amazing but certainly fun.

3 out of 5 Pumpkins.
